Oh, that's really scary. O.o There's only about 10 cases where I am, but I still am paranoid about it.

The Ebola virus, the one that killed 1/3 of Europe a long time ago, started out really small, too, like the H1N1 virus. But then it kept coming back stronger and stronger, and became immune to drugs and such. That's why everybody in the government is so afraid of it.

It could all just be a big scare, which is why I'm not, like, freaking out about it. XD But my parents are. People panic when a new disease comes, and it starts spreading, and people start to die. But that doesn't necesarily mean it's going to be a new pandemic. It's good to take precautions, though.

The Phillipines have closed some schools, so the outbreak there is more terrible than it is here. I hope you are okay Moonlight. Else I'll defend you from the disease!

Quote:
Swine flu still a risk
OUR OPINION: Taking sensible precautions still best antidote to the swine flu
Don't throw that mask away just yet. The World Health Organization declared the swine flu -- or H1N1 -- outbreak a pandemic, meaning the virus is now a global risk. The disease has spread to 74 countries, with nearly 30,000 cases confirmed and many more suspected but not reported.

So far, the death toll has been mercifully light: 144 fatalities, 27 of those in the United States. Americans have been fortunate, but we shouldn't push our luck.

That means -- with the summer travel season here -- people should take basic precautions. Wearing masks isn't recommended at this stage. Washing your hands frequently is a flu-fighter. So is covering your coughs and sneezes -- don't be shy about politely asking others to do likewise. And don't panic. The H1N1 virus has been mild in comparison with past pandemics. In the United States all but a handful of the 13,217 cases documented have recovered.

In South Florida three new cases turned up at the Krome Detention Center last week. Thirteen other inmates have flu-like symptoms. County health officials and Krome's managers must be sure inmates are getting proper medical care, not always a sure bet at such institutions.

As of last Thursday, Miami-Dade County had 111 confirmed cases of H1N1 flu and Broward had 67. Statewide cases number 247 -- a relatively low figure given the high volume of visitors that traverse Florida.

So far most Florida cases have been mild. But we shouldn't get complacent. No one should underestimate this disease. Flu pandemics can be devastating. The 1918 pandemic killed an astounding 40 million to 50 million people. The 1957 pandemic killed two million, and another in 1968 killed one million.

Consider that during the flu season when flu shots are available for Americans every fall, between 250,000 and 500,000 people die worldwide each year. Even with antibiotics, ventilators and other modern treatments, this disease remains a killer.

What's worrying the WHO and other health agencies is that this pandemic may last through next fall when the regular flu season sets in. Suffering from one virus could weaken your immune system to the other.

So far there is no vaccine for the H1N1 strain but pharmaceutical companies are working on developing one, and there is an abundance of antiviral serum available. It won't prevent you from getting infected but it could ease the symptoms and help you recover faster.

The other concern is that H1N1 will morph into a different, more virulent strain. For now, though, we're dealing with the H1N1 virus and its known symptoms.

The best course is to take reasonable precautions without going overboard.

Ha, ha, ha. This whole swine flu thing makes me laugh. Everyone was worked up about it at my school. It was fun to just sit there while they all were talking about it in my form. But then again I'm a nurses daughter, so you know...stuff like this doesn't faze me.

My mom's also a nurse.

Oh yeh.. I should really dig around for this swine flu. I always heard that it goes around but WHAT exactly happened for it to even APPEAR? Let's bet that's thanks to crazy scientists again. No offense but true :/

LOL! It started with piggies, but 'cause viruses can change their gentic information, it figured out how to pass onto humans. Clever but scary. (sorry if people knew this...)

We are lucky the health organization is reporting and trying to contain it, eh? Otherwise it'd be worst and people cannot have the luxury to "laugh" at it, and not take it seriously. You can all deal with it in your own way, but in many ways because of how they are reporting and containing it, it does help in some ways. To not worry about it is such a luxury for some, because of the organization doing their job properly, as much as possible.

At least that is what I believe. Though sometimes I dislike it when people pass it off as a "myth" as though all this is just a fad and is fake, like this lady on TV.
"I will go anywhere I want, this is nothing at all. They always say it's bad, but it never "breaks here."

That is what I mean by taking the organization's job and all that for granted. Nothing against her, but in all ways, if it's contained, all is well. Just keep yourself safe anyway by washing your hands. =)

it's actually good that we have doctors around the world. If we didn't we will all be dead. well alot of us. It is also good that news reporters are actually telling us what's happening so wecan be alert. Like rossete said, wash you hands. Look for syptomslike coughing, throwing up, and um I forgot the syptoms XD. So it's good that there's such things as TV and computers. O.O
