Spring was a nice season, Chase supposed. Walking in the empty field, totally abandoned except for his presence, he looked at the flowers and greenery peeking up through the foamy soil, damp with the season's rain and melted snow from the winter. Wisps of chill still clung in the air, and a breeze blew through the open meadow. Goosebumps rose on his flesh as he walked to the thin border of trees towards the back of the field and sat by a trunk, looking out at the town at the odd angle he had.

Mia slumped lazily in her wheelchair, half enjoying the lukewarm breeze against her skin. It would have been perfect to be leaping through the air right then, to be jumping about. Sadly, her limbs weren't available to her for now.

At least she now had one arm available to her now- her left arm, sadly, but it was mobile now. It was still painful, but she didn't care. She took every opportunity she could to use it, so she'd managed to wheel herself about for a while.
She probably shouldn't have gone without telling Chase, a fact she realised when she was about halfway through.

But, on a whim, there stood Chase, looking out at the world before him, looking at peace. Mia didn't call him out, she just sat there, smiling up at him to see if he would notice.

He didn't see her, not at first. For a moment, he simply stared into space. But after an instant in time, he got that eerie, hair-standing-on-end feeling at the base of his neck, not because of the chill, but because he was being watched. Quickly, he looked up, and was relieved to see Mia. "Mia!" he called out, standing up. She looked a little somber- maybe serene. It was still hard for her to be on the ground, he guessed. He half-walked, half-jogged over to her.

Mia almost reached her mobile arm down to wheel herself to Chase, but quickly thought against it.
No, maybe, keep it a surprise.

"Hello." She greeted, trying to sound quiet and sad, attempting desperately to supress a smile.
Which was difficult, because, if Chase could pick her most well hidden lies, he could obviously see her looking down to hide a creeping smile. She knew she'd be called out on it in a matter of seconds.

The corners of Mia's mouth were twitching, like she wanted to either smile or sneeze. "Let it all out," Chase suggested, backing out of the line of fire just in case it was the latter option. He sat back down on a particularly thick patch of grass and looked up at her; in her chair, she was a bit taller than him. Not much, though. "Having trouble getting around in the chair?"

Mia couldn't supress it anymore, she looked up to Chase with a happy grin.
"Not anymore," She giggled, slowly moving her arm from it's resting place on the chair. "I have an arm now." She answered proudly, stretching her arm out to it's full capacity.

It still hurt, but it didn't matter. She was semi-mobile, and that's all she cared about.

"Don't hurt yourself," he warned automatically as she reached out. "The last thing you need is another trip to the doctor." He was a little paranoid when it came to her injuries; he set her pain meds on the counter for her every morning, and practically carried an emergency kit in his bookbag, just in case. He wondered if she did the same, or just let life work itself out. He had a pretty good idea of which one it was, though.

Mia rolled her eyes and rest her head on her now mobile hand.
"Don't worry, I won't hurt myself." She promised, unsure of whether she could really keep her word or not, but happy nonetheless.
She was optimistic, looking forward to the future, looking forward to healing.

She caught a glimpse of the clear horizon Chase had seemingly been trapped in.
It was hard not to lose yourself in one of these days, in the space between the warmth and the cold, where both flew in wisps throughout the skies.
"What were you thinking about there, Chase?" She asked curiously, looking for an indication in his eyes. It was often difficult to figure him out, but Mia had a feeling she was starting to get the hang of it.

Chase shrugged. "I don't really know," he answered. "Nothing, I guess." He was able to do that from time to time- simply let his mind wander, unconcerned. It was harder to do since Mia's accident, but there was something familiar and easy about numbness. It was strange, and void, and when he snapped out of it, a bit creepy. It lacked warmth and emotion and feeling, lacked color and light and sound.

Conversation was much, much better. Especially with someone capable of it. "What about you?" he asked. "What have you been thinking about recently? You have to be pretty bored anyways, huh?"

Mia pondered for a moment.
She'd never really thought of, well, nothing. There was never silence in her mind, always something new and silly ticking about in her head.
Chase had that effect on her lately, always gave her something to ponder about, a new logic or something to keep her entertained.


"I don't think about anything fun. I think about all sorts of things, I suppose." She frowned, trying to remember a slide of things she'd thought about in all her time of boredom.
"A fox in socks and socks on a fox." She concluded, grinning.

Chase laughed out loud. "That's a good thing to think about." He smiled, and then flopped backwards into the grass, splaying his arms out between the blades. He had a startling moment of deja vu, and sat up quickly. "Weren't we just here?" he asked, looking around. "Not JUST here, but..." It clicked in his head. "Ah. Snow angels. The snowman that we never finished. We came here in the winter."

A light clicked on somewhere in Mia's head. Of course! They were in the same field.
It looked completely different without a thick duvet of snow over it. There were even a few dandelions sprouting now, and the landscape had been changed almost beyond recognition.

"Oh, yeah!" She smiled, feeling herself eve on the past. Back before she'd fallen. She knew she'd remember this place, just as a place of significance.
Cutting through the field towards the town, making snow angels and snowmen...

"Gosh, why does that seem so long ago?" Mia mused, looking the green field over.

A slight glaze of melancholy replaced the humor on Chase's face. "Time's speeding by," he said, almost tempted to break out into a ballad right there. Of course, he wouldn't. But it was tempting. "It looks so different with flowers and grass," he mused, flopping back on the ground. It wasn't long before he popped back up, scratching his arms and complaining, "Grass is itchy. I like snow better."

Mia barely supressed a giggle as Chase sat up in the grass, scratching.
"It's like an entirely different world..." She said, almost in a whisper.
That was two new worlds accounted for Mia, both scarily close to the ground.

Butterflies and other spry bugs and insects could be seen fluttering about the flowers; it looked so tranquil, like something out of a fairytale.
Mia lightly flicked off the sandals she'd slipped into this morning and let her feet rest on the grass, feeling the cold blades brush against her skin.

"What a world, huh?" She noted, feeling the whirling of hot and cold air through her hair. When the weather just couldn't make up it's mind, when it was stuck in that blissful void between hot and cold, it was a mad world.

"Everything changes." It was simple and went almost without saying, and yet, there was accuracy in simplicity. Seasons changed, people changed. Everything just pulled it along, and there seemed to be nothing capable of stopping it, even just to catch a breath. You caught up, or you got left behind, in the dust, by yourself.

Well, that was a thoroughly depressing train of thought. It was spring, for Goddess' sake! There were bunnies hopping around, and flowers, and sunshine, and...and...Mia in a wheelchair.

This...is exactly the opposite of numb, he decided, following Mia's lead and kicking his shoes off, as well.

Mia nodded, half of her listening, and half of her off somewhere in the wind.
It felt like Spring. It felt warm, it felt mild and carefree, it felt like easy days ahead.
Spring was just as glorious as Chase had promised her back in the Winter, a soft breeze, fresh green grass, a fresh scent in the air... Bunnies hopping around.

"When I recover, I'm going to catch a bunny." She declared lamely.
It was irrelevant, but she did't really care.

"Worry about recovering first, and then you can catch all the bunnies in the world. Heck, you can have one for a pet." He smiled. "I'll take you swimming when you get better. At the beach, in the summertime, in the ocean. It's really nice. I promise. Hot, but nice. Only, the local animals there aren't cute little rabbits, they're pinching crabs. Not the kind of pet you can cuddle or anything like that."

Mia hesitated at the moment at the thought of swimming.
She'd focused her entire body on running, she wasn't a confident swimmer.
At all.
But she quickly overcame that when she realised it was Chase. If she could trust anyone in the world, it was Chase.
Nothing bad will happen. she assured herself.

"I bet..." She started slyly, pausing for suspense.
"I bet I could hug a crab." She smiled confidently. "I can hug anything."
