| Higher and higher did the notes climb, dancing and spinning the venomous snake into a trance-like oblivion. Max tapped his foot ever so softly against the ground to the rhythm, watching with keen eyes as his cherished snake waved and wiggled, rising out of the classic wicker basket.
It was a strange instrument that Snake Charmers did use. A whirling, swirling song, filled with the most eccentric of notes to addle the brains of the Snakes they loved so much. Max held his own firm in his hands, his fingers flying across it's sleek surface to keep up with the wild pace of the entrancing song.
It was his passion. It was his life. Under the sun of Forget-Me-Not-Valley, with his snake rising obediently before the very eyes of bypassing citizens, he couldn't have been happier. _____________________ HOO HOO HOO |

| It was supposed to be a simple trip to the store. With her handbag clutched tightly in her fist, Arden walked briskly through the town with her head down. She couldn't shake the dark cloud that had been hanging over her lately. She didn't want to see anyone, talk to anyone, do anything. There was a large crowd directly in her way, and inwardly, she sighed.
Tucking her head down a little further into her chest, she started maneuvering through the mass of people. Some remarked loudly at this, but she ignored them, and kept moving. She was about halfway through when something on the ground caught her eye.
"What!" she yelped, startled, and jumped back. There, in a wicker basket, was a snake wiggling like limp spaghetti. Behind the snake, a boy, dark haired and reeking of mystery was playing some sort of instrument. Arden couldn't help but to stare. |

| Hisssssss.
Quicker and quicker did the wild song become. The Snake Charmer could feel his own heart beat quickening to the dancing rhythm, his fingers sliding with careful precision over his instrument. The snake, so venomous, weaved idly about in the air. It reared it's head boldly, a low hiss echoing from it's throat as the snake opened it's jaw wide, a pompous and proud display of it's teeth. So many times had Max practiced with this snake. It was a beautiful reptile, dangerous, large and brilliantly colored, a feisty adder he'd worked hard to capture and eventually tame to claim his own. Dahlia, he'd called it. Dahlia was one of his better snakes, not many of his Snakes worked with quite as flashy an attitude as the snake that had risen from the wicker basket that moment.
Raising a glance to the crowd now circling in idle awe, Max began to slow the tune town. With the now tarrying pace of the song, the Snake began to lower itself again. Eventually, it lay once more, concealed in the Wicker basket. Standing and quickly placing the lid over the basket, Max took a bow, smiling broadly to his audience, most of whom were now beginning to return to their business.

| When the music stopped, most people turned away and continued their business. Arden, on the other hand, began to stare. When everyone else in the crowd had left, she clapped. She had been the only one to do so, and it made an awkwardly loud sound in the otherwise quiet square.
"That was amazing," she said to the boy. A closer look told her that he wasn't much older than herself, maybe even the same age. She couldn't be sure. But in any case, he was talented and confident - two things Arden wasn't sure if she could say for herself. In a way, she envied this man, who didn't only charm snakes but audiences as well. She wished she could do that.
Well, she could live without the snakes. |

| A long, slow hiss escaped the wicker basket beside the Snake Charmer. As per usual, the crowd abruptly dissipated and returned to their usual routines, busying themselves once more. Except, to his surprise, one. A girl, perhaps his age, with fair ringlets cascading down to her waist like a golden waterfall, remained the only one still standing, even applauding him. A smile crept onto his face, glad he could please someone enough to earn a clap. It wasn't a particularly regular occurrence, but Max could safely say he liked being applauded, even though he could feel himself shyly recoiling into the shadow of his hood.
"I'm glad you liked it." Max answered, politely bowing his head. His dark fringe slid over his eyes, but he quickly swept them away. "I don't get many people clapping after a Performance." The Snake Charmer added, "It's nice to know I've pleased someone." _____________________ HOO HOO HOO |

| Arden blinked in surprise. "Really?" she asked. "Wow. Well, I guess the fact that I'm the only one here clapping should mean something to me, but I'm surprised that you're not applauded more often. Not many people can tame snakes, after all." She tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. "So, I guess you're pretty new here, huh? I mean, I think I would've noticed your presence before." And then she caught herself, and smiled, embarrassed.
"And I'm talking too much again," she said apologetically. "Sorry. It comes in spells." Either she was babbling like an idiot or she was withdrawing into her shell. She felt bipolar sometimes. |

| Max nodded, smiling under his hood while the girl spoke. "No, no." He encouraged, "I like a good conversation."
After all, it wasn't often one of his Audience clapped, and even went as far as to converse with him. Sure, it was a lot friendlier in Forget-Me-Not-Valley, and he got a bigger and better Audience, and they certainly took better to the snakes than they did back at home. But he still enjoyed chatting to the girl with the golden ringlets.
"I just came a few days ago, spent most of my time unpacking my Snakes and such." He explained, "It's a beautiful town, I got lost at least twice getting here." The Snake Charmer grinned, brushing his own dark bangs out of his face while the girl smiled. _____________________ HOO HOO HOO |

| "Well, so do I, but it always ends up feeling a little one-sided. I babble. A lot. When I'm nervous, mostly. And talking too much makes me even more nervous, so I talk more because of that. It's kind of like a never-ending cycle." She laughed sheepishly, rubbing the back of her neck with her hand. She wiped sticky strands of her blond hair from the back of her neck as she did so; even in the early fall, as the temperatures died down, she was still dying in the heat.
"It's easy to get lost around here," she said, bending down. She drew a couple of lines in the dirt with the tip of her finger, and, still squatting, began, "This is the center of town. The inn and most of the residences are over here. On this side, across the bridge, that's where the smaller farms are. Up here is the waterfall. Over here is the mansion, and down here is the beach." She rocked back on her heels and smiled upwards at the towering man.
Straightening up, she said, "I got lost a lot, too, when I moved here. It gets easier with time. Trust me." |

| Max nodded, smiling warmly under the shadow of his hood. "Well, I like it." He answered simply, turning his plain smile into a grin. He liked to listen, he liked switching onto Automatic and just listening to the endless things that people had to say. It interested him, and he learned so much about people while he simply sat and listened.
"It's... Fun, just listening, y'know?" He smiled. Max decided he liked this girl. Especially since she seemed to know her way around.
The Snake Charmer watched as the girl drew what looked to be a Map, explaining everything he'd failed to understand. Oh, that was why he couldn't get to the Library! And that's how he had to get to the Inn! Max watched the girl explain to him, watched her fair ringlets bounce by her shoulders and listened to what she had to say.
"I see..." He nodded, smiling up at the girl. "Thanks, uh..."
Max paused for a moment, realising something. "Say, I never got your name, Miss..." _____________________ HOO HOO HOO |

| Arden paused. "...Aren't you hot, in that hood?" she asked, tilting her head. "I'm burning up, and I'm in short sleeves." She pulled her hair over her shoulders. "Y'know, it's a small town here, but there are buildings with air conditioning units. If you weren't planning on doing another show soon, it'd be much more pleasant to hang out there."
And then, she smiled again. Ducking her head a little bit, she said, "I'm Arden." |

| The Snake Charmer paused for a moment, suddenly becoming aware of his own body temperature. He'd gotten into a habit of tuning it out, simply because he never removed his Hood. It remained on him at all times, regardless of the Weather. And now that his mind had turned to it, he be "Um, well. A little." He admitted, fanning himself a bit underneath his hood. "I don't have any other shows... We could probably go somewhere cool."
"I'm Max." He answered, seeing the girl smile, and returning the favour with a little smile of his own. _____________________ HOO HOO HOO |

| "Well, Max," Arden said. "There's quite a few places around here that we can go to. There's a library, a bakery, and a clinic with its own cafe. You get to pick." She tied her hair in a ponytail over her shoulder and added, "However, the library is free. But since you're new, I'd be happy to cover any purchases you might want to make at the cafe or bakery. Call it payment for your performance."
She peeked in her purse quickly. Scattered around were a few gold notes. She was disorganized as of late, but she had enough gold to pay. Good. |
