nope. it's just the way of the game, since the mineral town guys only show up once a week, they only show up about 16 times in the year, so, if you only give your guy 300 LP gifts, it's going to take you about 12 and a half game years. if you give your mineral town guy 500 LP gifts, it's going to take you 7 and a half years, but if you're able to give you're mineral town guy their faborite item, worth 800 LP, then it's going to take only about 4 and 3/4s game years.

how do u unlock the mines?

you need to have your hammer in your rucksack and you just enter the mines. carter will come in and ask you to unlock the first mine, then, when you reach the bottom of it (10 floor), come back, and he'll ask you to unlock the 2nd mine (255 floors) keep up this process and you can unlock the 3rd mine (999 floors) and the 4th mine (it's something like 65,552, the number is really random)

When I tried to unlock the mines it didn't work when I had an accessory equipped and I had to go inside the tent and talk to Carter before going inside the mine for the unlock scene to happen. So if it doesn't work for you try that ^^
